Coloured Pencil Basics: Everything You Need to Get Started

I wrote in my first post last year how I moved from graphite pencil to using coloured pencils. In this post, I go into further detail about the different colour pencils that are available and the essential tools for colour pencil art.

Why Choose Coloured Pencils?

Coloured pencils are a versatile and accessible medium for artists of all levels. They allow for intricate details, smooth blending, and rich, vibrant colours. Unlike paints, they require minimal setup and cleanup, making them perfect for beginners and hobbyists.

Essential Tools for Coloured Pencil Art

Having the right materials can make a significant difference in your artwork.

1. Quality Coloured Pencils

Not all coloured pencils are created equal. Here are the main types:

• Wax-Based Pencils – Softer and easier to blend, but may cause wax bloom over time. Examples: Prismacolor Premier, Derwent Coloursoft.

  
  

• Oil-Based Pencils – More durable, with a firmer core that holds a sharp point for fine details. Examples: Faber-Castell Polychromos, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor.

• Soft Brushes or Tissues – Useful for light blending without smudging.

4. Erasers and Sharpeners
